Heikichi Harata
HeiQuicci HARATACalligraphy designer, editorial designer, and artist. Born on September 28, 1947 in Kichijoji Minamimachi, Musashino City, Tokyo. Graduated from the Department of Crafts, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts, majoring in visual design in 1970. After that, he participated in the editing of the original town magazine "Shinjuku Play Map," Kousakusha's "Yu" and "Underground Theater," and in 1975, he held the first "Rainbow Science" exhibition, attracting attention. After working at the graphic design firm "WXY" in 1979, he founded the editorial design firm "EDiX" in 1989.
Representative works include the book "One Thousand and One Seconds Story" edited by Inagaki Taruho, Kagawa Shingo and Harata Heikichi (1990, winner of the Kodansha Publishing Culture Award and Book Design Award), Tobirano Ryoto's "Donogo-o-Tonka" (2008-2009), Takagi Sadashige's "Kuma Art Museum Exhibition Catalogue (Ehime Publishing Culture Award and many other awards)" (2009-), Matsuoka Seigo's "Fragile" (1995), Yoshimasu Gozo's "At the Entrance of the Fireworks House" (1995), "Mobile Suit Gundam Official Encyclopedia" (2001, winner of the Japan Printing Industry Federation Chairman's Award at the 36th Bookbinding and Book Design Competition), and Sukita Masayoshi's "T.REX 1972 SUKITA" (2007).
Record jackets: YMO (Yellow Magic Orchestra) Solid State Survivor (1979), Sheena & the Rockets Vacuum Pack (1979), Phew Phew (1981), Inoue Yosui Ballerina (1983), and Hosono Haruomi's Night on the Galactic Railroad Original Soundtrack (1985).
His work includes magazines such as "HEAVEN" (190-1981), "WX-raY Inaugural Preparation Issue" (1979), "Quick Japan" (1993-1998), and "Eureka" (1998-2021). He also worked on promotional art for the theater company "Tin Kid's Jidatsudan" (1980-1989). He has also worked on the monthly manga magazine "Garo" (1981-1998), the comic "Yumiko Oshima Selection" (1985-1986), and many others.
His latest publication is Digon: fragments, edited by Junichiro Gun (2024, Minato no Hito).
